Gard & Co.’s nominated charity is the RNLI: the charity that saves lives at sea.
On 28 February 1823, Sir William Hillary made an impassioned appeal to the nation, calling for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea. That service became the RNLI and since its founding, its brave lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 140,000 lives.
Every day of every year, people of all backgrounds get into danger in the water. The RNLI saves lives by providing a 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service, seasonal lifeguards, water safety education and initiatives, and flood rescue response.
The RNLI is also actively involved in water safety overseas. For instance, few people know that drowning kills an estimated 372,000 people worldwide every year. It is a staggering number, yet this global problem is not receiving the serious attention it needs. To put this conservative estimate into context, it is the equivalent of 70% of the global death toll from malnutrition, and 60% of that from malaria. The RNLI is working in partnership with other lifesaving and development organisations to raise awareness of this global epidemic of drownings and helping to find strategies that will make a difference.
Separate from the Coastguard and independent of the Government, the RNLI relies upon volunteers and supporters to run their lifesaving service. That is why Gard & Co. has selected the RNLI as their nominated charity for 2017.
Specifically we are supporting the local Plymouth lifeboats, which help to keep our local community safe on the water.
