MoD appeal to reduce compensation

Jul 28, 2009

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has launched an appeal to reduce compensation awarded to injured service people by the court.

wo service people originally awarded sums for their injuries through the armed forces compensation scheme had their compensation increased by an appeal tribunal to account for complications arising after the original injuries.

The MoD is seeking to restrict the amount of compensation payable by taking the case to the Court of Appeal.  With casualties rising in the latest offensive in Afghanistan it is a move that has drawn widespread criticism.

Amidst claims that the government is trying to skimp and save, armed forces minister Bill Rammell has pointed out that the basis of the appeal is about protecting the key principle of the armed forces compensation scheme: the most compensation for the most seriously injured.
