highest unemployment rate since May 1995
The latest official figures show UK unemployment at 2.47m, the highest level in 14 years.
The figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed an extra 210,000 people without work in the three months to July, bringing the unemployment rate to 7.9%.
The worst affected group are those aged between 16 and 24 with a record breaking 20% seeking employment. The number of jobless in this age group rose to 947,000 – representing 38.3% of all those unemployed.
Despite some signs of recovery in the general economy, experts are warning that unemployment figures will rise further toping 3m in 2010. This is because trends in unemployment lag behind other economic indicators.
