Whilst studying at the University of Plymouth Jacob has undertaken extensive summer placements with both Clyde & Co. and Thomas Miller.

At the Clyde & Co head office in Houndsditch, London, Jacob was placed in the Marine and International Trade (MIT) department dealing with very large international trade disputes involving oil, copper and steel.

At Thomas Miller, Plymouth, Jacob worked alongside a senior partner dealing with contentious legal issues in marine, commercial and international trade, specifically related to Protection and Indemnity.

Jacob’s other awards and achievements are:

  • Dean’s Award for Academic Achievement 2017
  • Winner of Plymouth University FLUX Competition 2017
  • Winner of PSLS Mooting Competition @ UK Supreme Court (Awarded by Lord Neuberger)
  • Dean’s Award for Academic Achievement 2015
  • Routledge Law Prize for Top Performing First Year Law Student

During his time at university Jacob also undertook the role of PALS Leader and Research Coordinator.  He facilitated Peer Assisted Learning Workshops, where research looking at ‘Serious Play’ and tactile learning, resulted in the development of a legal problem solving game.

Overall Jacob has proven to be an industrious and worthy winner!

At the University’s prestigious graduation and award ceremony, Steven Hudson, senior partner at Gard & Co. said, “When we began sponsoring the prize for Best Law Graduate we did so with the intention of fostering and encouraging the lawyers of the future.  We were particularly interested in promoting skills beyond the academics, such as communication, which are vital in everyday contact with clients.  Therefore the prize is awarded to the graduate with the best all round ability with the finest skills for practice.”

Gard & Co are always keen to encourage relationships with the University who are a major part of our local economic community.

In recognising this commitment Professor Peter Shears said, “It is a pleasure to acknowledge the support of Gard & Co for the Law Programme at the University of Plymouth. They were the first local firm to recognise the importance and quality of our provision, more than twenty years ago. Now nationally recognised, we remain locally orientated, taking pride in the fact that Gards still present the annual award for ‘The Best Law Graduate’.”
