Assistant Solicitor – Claimant Personal Injury
Civil Litigation Department

A vacancy arises due to the retirement of a senior assistant solicitor currently commanding a desk with a good caseload of fast track and multi-track personal injury claim files and a very small number of selective non-PI civil litigation files.

Gard & Co wish to recruit an ambitious, hard-working and innovative solicitor who will help the firm to:

  • exploit the opportunity to grow and develop the pre-existing personal injury caseload (95% PI) through smart marketing; and
  • to achieve the civil litigation department’s (CLD) other goals.

The successful candidate will be/have:

  • a qualified solicitor with a good academic record
  • a minimum of 3 to 5 years PQE
  • a Law Society PI panellist
  • proven track record in claimant PI work
  • good experience in at least one other major area of civil litigation
  • excellent inter-personal skills

Gard & Co wish to recruit an experienced receptionist and telephonist to greet all visitors to their offices as they arrive and to generally be the first point of contact, both visually and verbally, for clients of the firm.

The successful candidate will have the following competences/attributes

  • experienced individual seeking a career as a receptionist & telephonist
  • calm but warm and friendly personality with an aptitude to diffuse tension
  • ability to smile at/with, and to engage with anyone arriving in reception
  • ability to dress professionally and to maintain a tidy appearance
  • mental agility with computer literacy and an ability to discreetly multi-task
  • ability to engage discreetly with people whilst they are waiting in reception
  • ability to process telephone calls on a busy telephone switchboard
  • ability and drive to efficiently undertake one-off administrative tasks at quiet times
  • ability to work flexibly in a small administration team and to cover the firm’s reception and telephone needs during office hours throughout the year
  • the hours of work will be 8.30 am to 5.30 pm with one hour for lunch

Legal Assistants

Gard & Co believe in investing in talented graduates who have decided to pursue a career in the solicitor’s branch of the legal profession, within the City of Plymouth.

Each year Gard & Co employ at least one legal assistant to provide production and para-legal support to a solicitor in the firm. Subject to performance and suitable demonstration of commitment over a 12 to 24 month period, we provide full financial support, to those who merit it, through post graduate examinations (ILEX/GDL/LPC) and a training contract (if appropriate), to professional qualification.

The successful candidates will have a good academic record, a rounded skill set and plenty of real life experiences of the work place.

We are only interested in motivated and ambitious applicants.

Whilst our vacancy might be of most interest to those with law degrees, we are open to those with non-law degrees, if there is a settled intention of pursuing a career as a solicitor.
